On election night, I had the honor of photographing Senator Doris Turner’s celebration at Local Union 137 here in Springfield, and I’m still thinking about it. Election night photography is usually about the big moment everyone sees, but I’ve learned it’s really the end of a long road.
Behind every result there are months of early mornings and late nights, volunteers who gave up their evenings and weekends, families who shared their person with the whole community, and a lot of people who just kept showing up because they believed in what they were doing. You could feel all of that in the room.

Election Night Photography: The Quiet Moments Tell the Real Story
The hugs lasted a little longer. The laughter was a little louder. You could see on people’s faces what it meant to have all that work recognized.

The big moments are wonderful, but it’s the quiet ones in between that tell the real story.
A proud look from a family member. A tired but happy smile from someone who’s been knocking on doors for weeks. A friend leaning in to say “we did it.” Those are the moments people will want to look back on years from now, and I’m so grateful I got to be there to hold onto them. That’s the part I love most about election night photography, and about being an event photographer in Springfield, IL.

Showing Up for the Place We Call Home
No matter where any of us stand, I think it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate anyone willing to step forward and serve, and all the people who stand beside them. It’s not easy to put yourself out there, and it’s a reminder that our community is shaped by folks who choose to get involved.
Whether that’s running for office, volunteering, coaching a team, or just checking in on a neighbor, there’s always a way to show up for the place we call home.

A Big Thank You
Congratulations, Doris, and thank you to you and your team at Doris Turner for State Senate for trusting me with such a meaningful night. And thank you to everyone in that room at Local Union 137 for making me feel so welcome. Here are some of my favorites from the evening.
